    Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT)

    This hands-on technical training certificate program is designed to be completed in 21 months and will prepare students to work as technicians in the aviation industry and beyond.

    Anticipated Start Date: 8/26/2024 

    • Courses will be held in Johnstown at SFU's new Aviation Education Center at the John Murtha Cambria County Airport.  
    • Students will have on-site access to train on a CRJ200 regional airliner donated by SkyWest Airlines.
    • Our unique curriculum will prepare students to test for their General, Airframe and Powerplant certificates  and prepare them to execute precision, detail-oriented maintenance and manufacturing tasks.
    • Skills taught include inspection and manufacturing techniques for metallic and non-metallic structures, hydraulic and pneumatic connections, operation and troubleshooting of aircraft systems, and other topics necessary for Aviation Maintenance and other industries.
    • SFU is partnered with SkyWest Airlines, giving AMTS graduates access to their AMT Pathway Program.  Student benefits include mentorship, enhanced company seniority, tuition reimbursement, and a guaranteed final interview for qualified candidates.

    AMT Career Outlook

    The U.S. Department of  Labor cites a critical workforce gap  in the aviation maintenance field with an estimated 132,000 new technicians needed in the United States alone by 2040. SFU's proposed Aviation Maintenance Technician training program is being developed to help fill this workforce need.

    Aviation Maintenance Technician School

    Saint Francis University received a  $1 million grant from the ARC's POWER Initiative in 2022 to launch an Aviation Maintenance Technician School at the John P. Murtha Johnstown Cambria County Airport in Johnstown  through a collaboration with the Johnstown-Cambria County Airport Authority, Nulton Aviation Services, Cambria County, SkyWest Airlines,  Lockheed Martin Aeroparts, Inc., and Martin-Baker America. The AMTS aims to provide a fast-paced program that prepares students for work as Aviation Maintenance Technicians with both Airframe and Powerplant certifications.

     

    Elite Partner with Skywest Airlines

     In 2022, SFU because an Elite Partner with SkyWest Airlines. The partnership allows SFU students to access SkyWest’s Pilot Pathway Program and the Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Pathway Program. 

     

    These programs allow students access various benefits while completing their training, including mentoring by experienced pilots and mechanics, enhanced company seniority, and a guaranteed job interview.

    SFU names inaugural director for new Aviation Maintenance Technician School

    Saint Francis University has appointed Brianna Pavkovich of Rockwood, PA, the inaugural director of the university's newest workforce development initiative, the Aviation Maintenance Technician certificate program. As the new director, her first duties include guiding the program through the FAA approval process with the goal of beginning classes in Fall 2024.

    SFU Receives $1 Million Dollar ARC POWER Grant for Aviation Maintenance Technician School

    Saint Francis University has been awarded a $1 million grant by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to launch an Aviation Maintenance Technician School. The new Aviation Maintenance Technician School will be sited at the John Murtha Johnstown Cambria County Airport and will offer a 14 CFR 147-certified training curriculum for Aviation Maintenance Technicians.
