Saint Francis University Partners with UPMC to Expand Nursing Education in the Region
Saint Francis University is proud to announce its partnership with UPMC Altoona and the UPMC Mercy School of Nursing to expand access to nursing education across the region. The Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing has officially approved the establishment of a new location of the UPMC Mercy School of Nursing at UPMC Altoona, with the inaugural class set to begin in fall 2026.
This milestone represents a shared commitment between Saint Francis University and UPMC to address the growing demand for skilled nurses and to strengthen the future of healthcare in our communities. The UPMC Mercy School of Nursing at UPMC Altoona is a 16-month diploma program designed for individuals pursuing a career as a registered nurse (RN).
Students will gain more than 900 hours of clinical experience at UPMC Altoona and complete 21 credits in science and humanities through Saint Francis University. This integration ensures that students receive a comprehensive, high-quality education rooted in Franciscan values and academic excellence.
Upon completion of the program and successful passage of the RN licensing examination, graduates will be well-prepared to continue their education by earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Saint Francis University — while maintaining full-time employment.
“At Saint Francis University, we are deeply committed to preparing compassionate and highly skilled healthcare professionals who serve with integrity and excellence,” said Dr. Kerri Golden, Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Education. “This partnership with UPMC Altoona and the UPMC Mercy School of Nursing allows us to extend that mission and provide a seamless, affordable pathway for students to begin and advance their nursing careers close to home.”
This collaboration complements Saint Francis University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare education partnerships throughout the region and create meaningful opportunities for students and community members alike.
