Two engineering students from Saint Francis University showcased innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit at the Zingale Big Idea Competition, held April 10–11 at Allegheny  College—earning third place out of 45 teams and a $5,000 prize.

From Concept to Competition Success

Lauren Farabaugh and Seraphina Callaghan represented SFU with their innovative business idea, Heatmark, an industrial marker system designed to withstand high temperatures using  inorganic thermochromic pigments.

Their product addresses a critical safety gap in industrial environments by providing clear visual indicators of temperature changes, helping reduce risks associated with heat exposure.

The duo advanced through a competitive field, first placing in the top 10 in the semifinals, then refining their pitch to present before a larger panel of judges in the finals—ultimately securing third place overall.

Innovation with Real-World Impact

Heatmark’s technology offers a practical, scalable solution for industries where temperature monitoring is essential. By delivering immediate, color-based feedback, the system enhances safety protocols and promotes more informed decision-making in high-risk environments.

An Experience Beyond the Pitch

The Zingale Big Idea Competition is designed to emulate real-world entrepreneurial experiences, similar to Shark Tank's format—but with a strong emphasis on mentorship, feedback, and student development.

Participants not only present their ideas but also receive constructive coaching and guidance from a distinguished panel of judges, fostering an environment that encourages growth and innovation.

Reflecting on the experience, the students emphasized the value of networking and feedback throughout the event. As Kent Tonkin shared, “Your net worth is your network,” a sentiment that resonated throughout the competition.

Looking Ahead

The Zingale Big Idea Competition continues to foster the next generation of entrepreneurs,  awarding $40,000 in total prize money each year to support emerging ideas. With their strong finish and impactful innovation, Farabaugh and Callaghan exemplify the spirit of student-driven discovery at Saint Francis University—where ideas are not only imagined but brought to life.
