The NCAA has recently updated its Division III transition policy to allow qualifying institutions to reclassify in two years instead of the traditional three. Saint Francis University has opted for the accelerated schedule, enabling student-athletes to compete in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championship play one year earlier than planned.
On March 25, 2025, Saint Francis University announced its intention to transition from NCAA Division I to Division III athletics—a decision rooted in our commitment to student-centered values. Today, the University is sharing an important update regarding that timeline.
The NCAA has recently updated its Division III transition policy, allowing qualifying institutions to complete reclassification in two years instead of the traditional three-year period. After reviewing this change, the University has opted for the accelerated two-year schedule.
The result of the accelerated timeline means student-athletes will be eligible to compete in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championship play one year earlier than originally planned. This decision allows SFU to more swiftly align with the Division III model and further supports our emphasis on academic balance, personal development, and a meaningful athletic experience.
Just as we did with the original announcement, we remain focused on our student-athletes through every stage of the process. Individual meetings, group sessions, and clear communication efforts are underway. Please refer to francis.edu/D3Transition for the most accurate information.
This next phase represents steady progress in our long-term vision for Red Flash athletics. With a spirit of transparency, care, and purpose, we look ahead to this transition as a reflection of our values and a step toward an even stronger future.
