    Welcome from Our President

Welcome from the President to Parents of Prospective Students
Rev. Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., Ph.D.

Welcome to Saint Francis University!  I invite you to enjoy a virtual tour of our beautiful campus through these webpages, especially if you are “meeting” us here for the first time.  Whether you are searching for a university for your son or daughter to attend, determining the affordability of Saint Francis University, or have questions about scholarships and financial aid, you’ve come to the right place for answers to those questions and more.  As you navigate our website, you will learn about our academic programs, student life, opportunities to grow in faith, co-curricular activities of our campus, and much more.

We at Saint Francis are excited to partner with you as your son or daughter journeys to adulthood.  The Saint Francis University educational experience leads one to “Reach Higher, Go Far.”  Our mission is to form students with a mind for excellence, a spirit for peace and justice, and a heart for service.  We encourage all members of the university community to engage in lifelong learning, participate in service-learning activities, and extend mercy to those in need.  Pope Francis invites people to “open themselves to new horizons” through education, and at Saint Francis University, your student will have a myriad of opportunities to do so.  There are many transformational opportunities here at Saint Francis.

In 1847, six Franciscan friars came to Loretto, Pennsylvania from Ireland to found what was then known as Saint Francis Academy.  From such humble beginnings, Saint Francis University has become the oldest Franciscan institution of higher learning in the United States.  The Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular have been teaching and ministering on campus continuously since our founding.  Our mission is to provide each student with a Catholic and Franciscan education of the highest caliber.

Your student will have a unique opportunity to “walk with Saint Francis of Assisi.”  The spirit of Saint Francis is manifest in friars, faculty, and staff.  We look forward to continuing this journey with you and your student.

    Parents Giving Back

At Saint Francis University our priority is our students - your sons, daughters, and grandchildren.  As parents, you are valuable assets to the University. You have a breadth of experience that you bring to our University family.  Many parents provide networking opportunities for our students, share the SFU story and contribute to the University success with financial contributions.

We invite you to consider supporting Saint Francis University. With the help of our current Parents’ Fund Campaign.  Co-Chairs, David and Janet Skoner, SFU parents have already committed an impressive $36,000 to the 2015-16 Annual Fund for Excellence. Parent gifts support a vibrant academic community committed to creative and critical thinking, a challenging and successful athletic program for our student-athletes, and a living and learning experience grounded in Franciscan values.

Questions about the Annual Fund Parents Campaign for Excellence may be directed to Marie B. Melusky, Associate Vice President for Advancement at or at 814.472.3122.
