Excellence in STEM Education Teacher Award

  • The Excellence in STEM Education Teacher Award is sponsored by the Science Outreach Center at Saint Francis University to recognize excellence and innovation in the field of STEM education at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. A total of three awardees will be selected annually; one each for elementary, middle school, and high school. The recipients of the awards will be honored during the School of Sciences Awards Ceremony at the Saint Francis University Science Center in April.


    The applicant must be a K-12 grade STEM educator currently teaching elementary, middle, or high school level students.

    Individuals must teach in schools within the Pennsylvania counties of Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Clearfield, Indiana, or Somerset.

    Individuals must promote STEM in their classrooms, implement innovative, inquiry-based, technology infused STEM programs.

    Criteria for Judging:

    Excellence in innovative inquiry-based, technology infused STEM education is the main criterion for selection of the recipients. Among the types of excellence and innovation that will be considered by the committee are programs that:

    • Implement innovative inquiry-based, technology infused STEM programs
    • Address a real-world application or problem, integrate the elements of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)
    • Incorporate sensor-based data collection and visualization technologies
    • Teach various ability levels of students, including those that may be underrepresented in science, at risk, or have differing abilities
    • Completed applications must be received by February 28, 2015

    Award Submission Requirements:

    • Completed application form with signature
    • A narrative describing how they implement the teaching of STEM in the classroom, specifically addressing the criteria above, not to exceed 500 words
    • Two letters of support: (not to exceed 500 words each)
    • One from an administrator of the school they are teaching at currently
    • Describing hands-on activities
    • How is this person a leader
    • How does this person collaborate with other disciplines
    • How does this person excite students about STEM (engage and motivate)
    • One from a student (middle and high school) or student parent (elementary school)
    • All correspondence must be in 12 point Times New Roman font (1 inch margins)

    Upon receipt, applications become property of Saint Francis University. Applications will not be returned to applicants. Late or faxed applications will not be accepted. All material must be submitted at the same time by e-mail to ScienceOutreach@francis.edu or mailed in one envelope to: SFU Science Outreach Center, PO Box 600, Loretto, PA 15940. 

    Completed applications must be received by February 28, 2015.
