Two Windber High School students were awarded first prize in Saint Francis' inaugural High School Video Challenge contest. Freshman Erik Blasic and senior Jay Shaffer produced the winning entry entitled “Water Pollution.” They will receive $500 in cash.

Blasic and Shaffer’s video concentrates on the problem of acid mine drainage in Blacklick Creek, Stonycreek River, and Bens Creek, and investigates the various efforts to clean the affected waterways. Windber High School digital media instructor David Dzurko supervised the students’ project.

Students from Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Indiana, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties were eligible to participate in the competition that was sponsored by the university’s department of communications.
