Nursing students win scholarships from the Portiuncula Foundation

Four Saint Francis senior nursing students will receive scholarships from the Portiuncula Foundation in Pittsburgh. This is the first year that students from a single nursing program won all of the scholarships. The scholarships and recipients are:

Teresa Lynn Diethorn Memorial Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to Marlene Hileman
Teresa Lynn Diethorn Memorial Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to Amanda Marquis
Major Helen Humenansky Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to Sharon Bracken
Frances and Forrest Ellsworth Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to Heather Eckenrode

The Portiuncula Foundation grants scholarships to students working to obtain a nursing diploma or degree from a Catholic nursing school in western Pennsylvania. All of the applicants must be entering his/her senior year, demonstrate financial need, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

The Diethorn Scholarship requires evidence of community service. All of the applicants must write an essay stating why he/she requests the grant. The financial aid department must sign a letter attesting to their financial need. The nursing department chair must write a letter of support for the applicants.

The students will receive the scholarships at a brunch on Wednesday, June 5, at the Mt. Alvernia Convent in Pittsburgh.
