Maurice Carmody graduated with a Doctorate in Church History from the Gregorian University, Rome, in 1988. From 1992 to 2004, he held the Chair of Franciscan History in the Franciscan Institute of Spirituality at the Pontifical Athenaeum of St. Anthony, Rome. A New Zealander, he is currently working in the Archdiocese of Wellington, New Zealand. In addition to his academic work, he has been involved in campus ministry, retreats, assistance to the Secular Franciscan Order and spiritual direction since 1970. His book, The Leonine Union of the Order of Friars Minor, 1897, was published by the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure, New York, in 1994.
He has also published several articles on different aspects of Franciscan History. When circumstances permit, Maurice enjoys bush-walking and relaxing with members of his family in New Zealand.
