HIST Garrett Lucas Student Story content

Meet Garrett Lucas ’15, a recent Saint Francis University history program alumnus.

Garrett knew he wanted to design some kind of senior capstone project that would help him be the best high school history teacher he could be. Having a life-long interest in World War II, he realized that teaching about local community members’ involvement in that war would be a good way to help students connect to the past.

For his project, Garrett visited the Cambria County Historical Society in Ebensburg (near Saint Francis University) to learn about and take pictures of guns, uniforms, maps, and other artifacts that local World War II veterans and their families have donated. He then incorporated these pictures into the Unit Plan that he designed in conjunction with both his education class and his senior history capstone class.

In recognition of his work and his leadership role on and off the football field, Garrett was a co-recipient of the senior history award for his graduating class. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in education while serving as an assistant football coach at Westminster College.  He serves as academic advisor to the football team and reports that he is grateful to the Saint Francis history professors for showing him “how to be a great advisor.” He will be graduating from Westminster in May of 2016 and plans to pursue a career as a social studies teacher.
