  • History of the Brother Shamus Charity Ride

During a visit to the Dorothy Day Outreach Center in 2011, Brother Shamus McGrenra witnessed an emotional exchange between a young mother and a DDOC staff member. He was compelled to help in some way, and decided to use his love of cycling to raise money for DDOC. That summer, he founded the Brother Shamus Charity Ride, cycling 375 miles and raising $12,000 for the Dorothy Day Outreach Center.

After second successful Charity Ride in 2012, the annual ride came to a halt in 2013 when Br. Shamus was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and began chemotherapy and radiation treatments. That year, with the support of the Saint Francis Community,  $30,000 was raised in Brother Shamus's honor.

One year after his diagnosis—and while continuing his cancer treatments— Brother Shamus resumed his Charity Ride in 2014, successfully cycling "5 States in 5 Days" and raising $32,000 for DDOC.

Now miraculously in remission, Brother Shamus continues the annual ride to raise money for the Dorothy Day Outreach Center. In seven years, he has raised nearly $200,000. This year (2017) will be his toughest route yet, as he plans to canvas the steep mountains of New England and ride approximately 1,000 miles before finishing in Jamestown, VA.   More about the Charity Ride history
