Northeast Conference Postponement of Fall Sports 2020

07/30/2020

Editors note: This message was shared with the University Community today from Fr. Malachi Van Tassell.

 Dear Saint Francis University Community,

I am disappointed to share the news that last night the Northeast Conference (NEC) Council of Presidents voted to postpone all fall sports athletics competition and championships.  The Council agreed to reconvene again by October 1 to evaluate the public health crisis and competitive options moving forward.  Details of the announcement may be found on the athletics website.

For our Red Flash student-athletes and coaches, who have eagerly awaited the opportunity to return to competition, this is disheartening.  Nevertheless, having repeatedly demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity through competition, I know that they will garner the same strength and resiliency in meeting this latest challenge.  The legacy of SFU Athletics is one of self-sacrifice for service.  As our role model, Jack Twyman, so generously gave of himself for Maurice Stokes, let us remember to serve our athletic family with the same spirit of selflessness.

I know I speak for many in saying that we welcome the homecoming of our students, faculty and coaches as they each bring an essential piece of vibrancy and enthusiasm to campus.  The Saint Francis spirit is deeply enriched by the learning that occurs both inside and outside the classroom.  In the true meaning of community, we eagerly anticipate gathering together and providing relevant opportunities for our student-athletes to be with fellow teammates and coaches within our transformative learning environment.

In light of all the sacrifices each of us has made in our daily lives within this new context, let us be ever mindful of how we can support one another.  The mission of Saint Francis University remains the same, to help each student become that someone they are called to be.

Sincerely,

Fr. Malachi, T.O.R.
President
