More than 300 Saint Francis students, faculty, staff, and board and community members gathered on Friday, October 4, 2019 for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Health Sciences Experiential Learning Commons (ELC). The new, 10,000 sq. ft. on-campus facility provides state-of-the-art classroom, laboratory and clinical education space to instruct students enrolled in the Health Sciences programs.
Mr. Lawrence Giannone '72, Vice Chairman of the SFU Board of Trustees, provided the opening and closing remarks. Speakers included Dr. Donald Walkovich, Dean of the School of Health Science & Education, Dr. Rita Trofino, Associate Dean of the School of Health Science & Education and Chairperson of the Nursing Department, former state Senator John Wozniak, and Rev. Jason Wooleyhan, T.O.R, Office of Student Engagement, who provided the invocation. University President, the Very Reverend Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., Ph.D., gave remarks and the blessing.
The ELC is equipped with several new high-functioning manikins, a clinical skills lab, and a simulated apartment for students to practice providing care to patients in the home environment. The hospital-like setting that allows students to work interprofessionally in a way that simulates the collaborative process of caring for a patient.
The $4 million construction project was funded through a $1 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RCAP) Grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a $2 million anonymous donation, and $1 million in gifts from alumni and friends. A recent generous $2.5 million anonymous donation will usher the project into its next phase, which will include renovation of Sullivan Hall.
This ambitious multi-phase project will benefit students in many of the Health Science disciplines, such as Master of Cancer Care, Exercise Physiology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Public Health, and Social Work.
