A community message from Fr. Joseph Lehman, TOR, Ph.D.
Vice President for Mission Integration

Saint Francis University offers its deepest sympathy and respects to the families and friends of the victims of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh this past Saturday. Fr. Malachi Van Tassell, TOR offered a time of prayer for the victims at the beginning of the State of the University address, a University-wide meeting on Tuesday.

As a Franciscan Catholic university, we are deeply disturbed that religious bigotry and hatred continues to exist in our society today. As a community of faith and prayer, it runs counter to every value we hold dear and stand for.

In solidarity with our Jewish friends and neighbors, may the Prayer of Saint Francis be uttered on our lips and in our hearts.

Lord make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy

O divine master grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life
