The workplace will be a zoo for four Saint Francis University students this summer. Junior Megan Alborg, Sophomores Samantha Decker and Adam Pillot, and Freshman Megan Williams have all secured summer internships at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.
Adam Pillot & Megan Alborg, Aquarium and Zoo Science majors, will be Animal Ambassadors. Their daily job will consist of cleaning cages, feeding the animals, and performing husbandry jobs. They’ll learn how to present and handle the animals while interacting with the zoo visitors.
Samantha Decker, a Biology major with a Marine Biology concentration, will be a Water’s Edge intern and will feed and help with the husbandry of sea otters, sea lions and polar bears. She’ll study their behaviors and how to interact with the animals. She’ll work on a plan to enrich their feeding habits and keep them stimulated while they are in captivity. She’ll also provide talks with the public.
Megan Williams, a Biology major with a Marine Biology concentration, will be interning with the PPG Aquarium, where she will hand-feed penguins and track their diet. She’ll be diving and cleaning fresh and saltwater tanks, as well as cleaning in and outside of the exhibits.
