The inaugural recipient of The 2nd Lt. James Barry McGill USMC Memorial Scholarship was named in a small
event on Veterans Day. Freshman Exercise Physiology student, Petty Officer
Jesse Switzer, received the honor. Petty Officer Switzer is a 2013 graduate of
Bishop Carroll Catholic High School. After graduation, he entered the Navy,
achieved E5, and was a small boat gunner, mechanic, navigator, and dog handler.
The Scholarship was created to honor 2nd Lt. James Barry McGill, the
first Saint Francis alumnus killed in action during the Vietnam War.
that he will be remembered for both the man he was and the sacrifice he made, a
group of Saint Francis University alumni and Steve McGill, created a scholarship
that will assist Pennsylvania high school students from Blair, Cambria, and
Somerset counties, a region where the McGills have deep roots. Also In attendance
were members of McGill’s 2nd Platoon. Each member honored in knowing
that fifty years since McGill’s death, he will not be forgotten.
