For the first time, the Saint Francis University chapter of Sideline Cancer has partnered with Bro. Shamus to support his annual charity bicycle ride to benefit the Dorothy Day Outreach Center. The group will host fundraisers on campus this September to raise money for the Bro. Shamus Charity Ride.
Battling Stage Four Cancer
In the winter of 2013, during a routine medical screening, Bro. Shamus was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, and was advised by his doctors to begin treatment that included simultaneous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.
Despite his prognosis, Bro. Shamus knew how much the Dorothy Day Outreach Center relied on the money from his charity ride, and he reached out to the community for help. Through the generous support of University alumni and friends, he was still able to raise nearly $30,000 without cycling a single mile.
The following summer (2014), while still undergoing chemotherapy treatments, Bro. Shamus completed his third charity ride, “Five States in Five Days (the Lord Willing) for the DDC.” The next spring, he finally received the news that his cancer was in remission, allowing him to continue his mission of cycling hundreds (or thousands) of miles to help the poor and needy in the area.
About Sideline Cancer
First established on campus in 2016, the goals of the Saint Francis University Sideline Cancer chapter include advocacy for a cure by hosting and supporting cancer related events and raising funds to be used to help members of the University community dealing with cancer issues.
Sideline Cancer is a registered trademark of the Griffith Family Foundation, whose mission it is to fund a cure for pancreatic cancer; to offer hope for those in need; to connect patients families and communities; and to raise awareness of the necessity for a new direction of innovative research and treatment plans.
SFU Sideline Cancer is a proud sponsor of the Bro. Shamus Charity Ride. To show its support, the chapter will host fundraisers on campus this September. The majority of the proceeds will benefit the Dorothy Day Outreach Center in Bro. Shamus’ honor. A smaller portion will be used to support the Griffith Family Foundation and SFU Sideline Cancer.
