History of the Shamus Shuffle
In 2011, Bro. Shamus McGrenra T.O.R., a 70-year-old Franciscan friar beloved by the community, decided to use his love of cycling as a way to raise money for the Dorothy Day Outreach Center at Saint Francis University. Hence, the annual
Brother Shamus Charity Ride was born. The first year, he cycled 375 miles, and was able to raise over $12,000. Since then, he has raised a total of over $200,000 for the Center to assist local families in need. While making initial plans for his third charity ride in 2013, Bro. Shamus was diagnosed with colon cancer. Undergoing treatment and unable to ride, but knowing how much the
Dorothy Day Outreach Center relies on his fundraising efforts, he reached out to the community for help. To show its support, Saint Francis University organized the first Bro. Shamus Shuffle, an event aimed to get others moving and to help Bro. Shamus reach his fundraising goal.
The Shamus Shuffle remains a fun community event that allows others to join Brother Shamus as he cycles for charity.
