TIPS FOR PARENTS
- Be sensitive to the influence your needs, values, opinions and expectations have on your student's educational and career decisions.
- Don't expect your son or daughter to follow your expectations perfectly. Allow him or her time to explore new ideas.
- The family plays an important role in helping students with their career decisions. Support and show interest in your student's plans. Positive results will show.
- Encourage your son or daughter to visit the Career Services Office, 302 Scotus Hall, early in his or her collegiate career. The office will assist those who are uncertain or confused about choosing a major or even changing a major. We have computerized guidance systems and paper and pencil based interest, personality and skills inventories.
- Be Patient with your son or daughter's decision making. It takes time to conduct self-awareness and gather career information. An informed decision is the best route.Remember - it's okay to start college with an undeclared major.
- Realize that your student's major isn't the only factor that will determine his or her future career and success. Personal qualities, experience and skills are all very important.
- Encourage your student to accumulate some credentials. Students need to recognize the importance of campus activities, internships, volunteer experiences and summer employment. This helps them build leadership, personal and professional development.
- Compliment your student on his or her successes and good decisions.
- Be aware of your personal view of work and careers. The positive and negative work attitudes will have an effect on your student's attitudes and values.
- Assist your student with balancing career and other important areas in life.
- Give your college student time to explore a variety of interests, occupations and majors. Some students change majors several times. If you're concerned, connect him/her with Career Services.
- Understand that career development is a life-long process. People choose new directions and careers as they learn more about themselves and the world of work.
- Have some fun. Relax and enjoy this exciting time in your student's life. Change is inevitable.
