Mathematics Program

Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunities pennwapsites

There are several undergraduate research areas mentored by mathematics faculty at SFU. The most recent is in Renewable Energy, modeling Wind Data for PennWap, the Pennsylvania Wind Assessment Program, which is housed in the Renewable Energy Center on campus. Much of this research combines mathematical modeling with computer programming, so joint teams of Computer Science and Mathematics students are working together on this project.  During the summer of 2007, three students jointly worked on a Wind data analysis project. Future projects include:

Follow-up Data Analysis on existing projects
(Use/Verify software developed in Summer 07 to analyze existing and new sites)
Execute Software for multiple sites
Perform Analysis
Document Insights for further automating assessments

On-Campus Test Site
(Capture and Analyze Data from a Permanent, On-campus Wind Tower / Test Site)
Create Remote Data Collection Laboratory
Create Wind Database

Establish Web Access to Wind Database

Establish Center of Excellence for PennWAP
Web-based Site Application
(Create Web-based Site Application and Pre-Qualifier -- to determine which site applications should proceed)
Analyze Existing Process
Develop software
Assess effectiveness
ROI Program
(Automate Return-On-Investment Assessment for Potential Turbine Sites)
Analyze Existing Process
Develop Software
Assess effectiveness

Development of a Public Access Web Site of Wind Energy Production Impact
Web-based Site Application
Use model of On-Campus Test Site as model for Swallow Farm project
Show real time energy production with history
Show real time reduction of harmful emissions
Show real time assessment of environmental impact…moving meters showing positives against negatives
Make available data for others to model

Animated model of energy flow.

Development of precursor Wind Energy Assessment Expert System

Web-based or Stand alone
Predictor of sites
Analysis of potential power and dollar production
Siting of turbines model based upon terrain…
Financial modeling of income/costs
