About the Dorothy Day Center
The Dorothy Day Center was created in 1980 following in the steps of our namesake, Dorothy Day. The Dorothy Day Center believes that hospitality is the key to serving others. Local families are able to benefit from the well-stocked food and clothing pantries. Through kindness and generosity of campus administration, faculty, staff, and even members of several local parishes the center is given the opportunity to serve in different areas such as Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas presents, and Easter baskets to those in need. The Dorothy Day Center serves the community and continues to welcome all who come to its door treating everyone with dignity and respect.
When Saint Francis of Assisi saw an outcast in society, he turned his back...this is, until he saw the face of Christ in a leper and with great love embraced him. Saint Francis University administration, faculty, staff, and students have joined many benefactors in keeping this tradition of loving and serving those in need of God's loving embrace through the Dorothy Day Center since 1980.
The goal of the Dorothy Day Center at Saint Francis University is to continue the work of Francis of Assisi and Dorothy Day amid the Allegheny Mountains.
Students, throughout the school year, become educated and enabled to reach out to people in the area. Students are actively engaged in many programs, especially on the weekends, during which they are able to offer more time outside of their busy academic schedules.
Many Saint Francis University graduates have taken these service learning experiences to the jobs and communities where they have made their homes. A high number of students have gone on to do one or more years of service for the homeless and underprivileged. Thus, the spirit of Saint Francis and Dorothy Day have been carried on by many alumni.
