We've looked at many, many wind maps for thousands of Pennsylvanians and though each had its strengths we decided to make our own. . .we hope you find them valuable. . .and choose to apply to our Community Wind Project or consider installing a small wind turbine.
Here you will find wind maps of each county in Pennsylvania. The wind maps show Wind Power Classes of 2 and above. Just click on the thumbnail image to see your county in greater detail. The map shows Class 2 wind in orange and Class 3 and above in blue. For more we encourage you to visit the state's official PA Wind Map it can also help you. Note: All wind mapping is an approximated value calculated through complex formulas and correlations. In order to make a proper site assessment it is necessary to collect a full year of on site data using a meterological data tower provided by the Renewable Energy Center. All maps are created using DeLorme XMap GIS Editor software using wind data originally generated for Pennsylvania by AWS Truewind, an engineering and meteorological consulting firm based in Albany, New York. Wondering how wind maps are created? The Renewable Energy Center's Community Wind Project seeks to place wind data collection towers within those Wind Power Classes of 3 and above. Please contact us if you or your business or organization would like more information about our Community Wind Project. For a full explanation of how wind speeds are classified see our Wind Power Classes page. Note: All Thumb images are in bitmap format for each county. PDF's are available with the current exemptions of Crawford, Fulton, Greene, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Monroe, Somerset, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Union, and Venango Counties. Please be patient as these counties will have PDF files very soon. After you have checked your wind resource on our maps, take a look at the financial feasibility of some possible small wind projects for your Wind Power Class using our Small Wind Estimator series. This series was created to show possible payback periods for different small wind turbines at sites with specific qualities of wind resources. Check out Small Wind Estimator: Class 2 if you are located in Wind Power Class 2 (orange). Check out Small Wind Estimator: Class 3 if you are located in Wind Power Class 3+ (blue). |
