About the Methodology

The Pittsburgh-based company conducted a deep-dive of 106 institutions in the state examining academic, admissions, financial, and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education along with millions of reviews from students and alumni.

Niche updated its methodology for the annual Best Colleges rankings this year. It excluded all SAT and ACT-related factors to reflect "the lessened emphasis on test scores" in the application process. It also added an economic mobility index to gauge how well students are able to improve their economic standing after graduating from a given school based on students receiving Pell grants, the net price of tuition for low-income students and the median salary for those students six years after graduating. A number of other academic, social, athletic and campus-related factors are considered in the rankings.
