Head Coach

E-mail Coach:  fmoreno@francis.edu

Felix Moreno enters his second season as head men’s and women’s Cross Country and Track & Field coach at Saint Francis University with the goal of building upon the foundation of success that is in place.

He leads a Red Flash program that has won a combined 20 Northeast Conference titles in the past 11 years.

Since being named head coach at Saint Francis, Moreno has coached four men’s student-athletes to Northeast Conference Indoor titles, and two to outdoor titles. He has also guided eight Red Flash women to indoor conference titles, while three women have captured outdoor titles under his tutelage. In addition to his 17 NEC champions in two indoor seasons and one outdoor season, he was also at the helm of the program when former student-athlete Erika Jacobs was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American.

Experience is on the side of the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, native. While serving as five-year head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Frostburg State University, Moreno coached 22 Mason Dixon Conference champions, and was the 2005 Women’s Track and Field Coach-of-the-Year. He also had 22 NCAA qualifiers, four NCAA All-Americans and one NCAA top-ranked female athlete, as well as 50 ECAC qualifiers and two ECAC champions.

Moreno, who was born in the Dominican Republic, but raised in Manhattan, N.Y., received his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish in 1995 from SUNY-Plattsburgh, and then earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from SUNY-Cortland in 1999. In December 2000, Moreno received his Master of Science in Physical Education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. His master thesis was “Guided Imagery Use by Distance Runners” to enhance athletic performance at the national elite level. Moreno is currently working on his Doctorate degree.

Having started his coaching career at SUNY-Plattsburgh in 1993, Moreno brings more than 15 years of coaching experience to Loretto. He was assistant coach for the SUNY-Plattsburgh men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs before spending two seasons in the same positions at both Hartwick and Wisconsin-Platteville.

After coaching six conference champions, five All-Americans and three NCAA qualifiers at Wisconsin-Platteville, Moreno moved on to his first head coaching position at Frostburg State. He helped lead the 2000 indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the WIAC Conference Championships, the school’s best showing in 26 years. That year, he also led the school to its best performance in 29 years at the NCAA Division III Championships, where the team took 10th. Moreno’s squad bested that performance with a seventh-place finish the next season.

A major contributor to Moreno’s success has been his philosophy of using the Biomechanics Video Analyses Expertise in his training regime.

During his collegiate career, Moreno set the 400-meter hurdle record at Plattsburgh State in 1990. He also broke the Adams State College 4x400 meter All-Conference Indoor/Outdoor record and the 400-meter outdoor records at SUNY-Albany and at McGill University. During the fall semesters of 1989 ad 1990 at Plattsburg State University, Moreno was named the Cross Country Promising Freshman and sophomore.

Moreno is a USA Track and Field Level I Lead Instructor, as well as being certified at Level II. He is also a member of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. In addition to his collegiate experience as a student athlete and coach, Moreno has served as a personal trainer and a strength and conditioning coach throughout his career.

In his experience as a personal trainer and strength and condition coach, Moreno has become an expert in FITLINNX, and has taught classes in Stress Management at the Worksite, Fitness Assessment, Self-Defense & Lecture Guest for Anatomic and Physiology specifically the Fitness, Nutrition, and the Muscular System.
