Women’s Volleyball Upset in NEC Semifinals

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (11/18/2006) – First team All-Northeast Conference selection Anne Roosevelt (Plymouth, MI/Mercy) put on a show but it wasn’t enough as Robert Morris (PA) downed the Saint Francis University women’s volleyball team 3-1 (30-21, 30-28, 18-30, 30-25) to advance to the Northeast Conference finals on Saturday evening.  The Colonials will face top-seed Long Island University Sunday in the championship match.

Roosevelt finished with a match-high 19 kills and 18 digs.  NEC second-teamer Kristin Buter (Bowie, MD/Bowie) closed with 12 kills and senior Angela Shotter (Uniontown, PA / Laurel Highlands) came up with 13 digs for the Red Flash.

The Flash managed just one win in the four-game set, a solid 30-18 victory in the third game.   Buter paved the way for the Red Flash win, earning six of the team’s 17 kills in what proved to be one of the lone SFU highlights on the evening.

Three Robert Morris players reached double-digit kills and three more earned double-digit digs in the Colonial’s impressive performance.

The loss ends Saint Francis’ best season in program history finishing 19-14 overall and 7-1 in the Northeast Conference, good enough to clinch the second seed in the conference tournament.

In addition to the All-NEC honors earned by Roosevelt and Buter, head coach Scott Gleason was named the conference Women’s Volleyball Coach-of-the-Year by his peers.
