Red Flash Women's Volleyball

11/05/2006
Records Fall as Flash Win 7th Straight

LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 5, 2006) – The Saint Francis University women’s volleyball team (18-12) is living up to its nickname these days.  The Red Flash have been red hot in recent weeks winning their last seven matches and cruising to a 6-0 record in the Northeast Conference.  The Flash have run into their fair share of resistance, however, as evidenced by Sunday’s 3-2 (31-29, 15-30, 30-25, 28-30, 15-11) nail-biter versus Central Connecticut State University.

Senior Anne Roosevelt broke two records on the day and tied for second in a third as she racked up 18 kills and 24 digs.  Roosevelt’s seven service aces on the day tied for second on the SFU all-time aces-in-a-match list during the rally scoring era.  In the match’s third game, Roosevelt set the new mark for kills in a season, besting her own record of 425 set in 2004.  In the fourth game, she passed Nichole Hyer to become the all-time career kills leader at Saint Francis.  She ended the game with 1,346 career kills.

Sophomore Kayla Greenwalt posted a match-high 10 blocks, matching a career-high and tying for second place on the blocks-in-a-game column.

Also coming up big in what was the final regular season home match for the Flash, was Kristen Buter who turned in a match-high 21 kills in the winning effort.  On defense, Buter came up with 14 digs followed by Lauren Parisi who also turned in a double-digit dig total with 10.

With the win, the Flash, who clinched an NEC play-off birth with Saturday’s win versus Quinnipiac, can finish no lower than second in the regular season league standings. The victory also means that the winner of Saturday, Nov. 11’s match at Long Island will clinch the NEC regular season championship along with the honor of being the host team of the 2006 NEC women’s volleyball tournament.

Notes:  With one more win, the Red Flash will break the program record for wins in a season set in 1999… The Red Flash are 11-2 in their last 13 matches; the program’s previous best 13-match record was 10-3 set in 1999.
