SFU Women's Volleyball Team Picks Up Three All-NEC Honors

LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 17, 2006) – Saint Francis senior outside hitter Anne Roosevelt (Plymouth, Mich. / Mercy), sophomore outside hitter Kristin Buter (Bowie, Md. / Bowie) and head coach Scott Gleason picked up all-Northeast Conference Women’s Volleyball honors, it was announced on the eve of the 2006 NEC Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

Gleason was named the Northeast Conference Women’s Volleyball Coach-of-the-Year by his peers after leading the Red Flash to a school record 19 wins and their best showing in league play (7-1 NEC record) since 1997. Gleason guided Saint Francis to upset wins over state rivals Robert Morris and Duquesne, snapping a 19-match losing streak to the Colonials and a 26-match losing skid to the Dukes.

Roosevelt was named an All-NEC First Team member at outside hitter, making the jump after back-to-back second team accolades in 2004 and 2005, Buter earned her first career honor on the second team as an outside hitter.

Roosevelt continues to be the all-around go-to player for the Red Flash this year, ranking second in the league in kills (4.06 kpg), service aces (0.53 sapg) and points (4.74 ppg) and fourth in digs (3.83 dpg).

Buter ranks eighth in the league with 3.40 kills per game and also contributes 2.13 digs per game and 0.48 blocks per game for the Red Flash.

Saint Francis is currently 19-13 overall, and finished 7-1 in the Northeast Conference to clinch the league’s second seed in the conference tournament, which begins on Saturday. The Red Flash earned a first-round bye with the second seed, and will play at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, facing the winner of No. 3 Robert Morris versus No. 6 Wagner. A win would put Saint Francis into the championship match, which will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Long Island’s Martina Wagner was named the Northeast Conference Women’s Volleyball Player-of-the-Year, Central Connecticut State’s Brynn Good was selected the league’s Setter-of-the-Year, and CCSU’s Jamie Baumert was honored as the Rookie-of-the-Year.
