Lake Saint Francis Watershed Trail

The trail was designed to provide access to the University's quieter, more natural areas and to increase knowledge of our local ecology. In addition to its recreational use, the trail and surrounding ecosystem are used by the Biology Department and other members of the campus and local community as a site to conduct scientific research and to promote environmental education.
Interpretive signs along the path focus on two major themes. First, there is an emphasis on the relationship of watershed streams and springs to Lake Saint Francis, located at the base of the watershed. Second, there is a focus on the process of ecological succession, which can be seen in a variety of communities along the length of the trail.
The trail is open for use to all members of the community. There are trailheads at both Lake Saint Francis and near the Saint Francis University Softball Field on the north side of campus. If visiting, please remember that biking is prohibited due to problems of erosion along the trail. The Saint Franics University Biology Department and Environmental Awareness Society are responsible for the trail's upkeep, and should be contacted with questions or concerns by phone at 814-472-3094 or via email at lloya@francis.edu.
A 64-page trail guide that details the ecology of the trail is available from the Biology Department and is provided free of charge in PDF format. Please click the link below to access the guide.
