LEWISBURG, Pa. (Dec. 2, 2006) – The Saint Francis women’s indoor track & field team kicked off the 2006-07 campaign with several strong performances on Saturday as the Red Flash competed in the Bucknell Bison Opener at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Competing in the non-scored event with the Red Flash were Bucknell, Georgetown, Howard, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Loyola (Md.), Morgan State, Shippensburg, Susquehanna, Towson, UMBC, Penn, and Ursinus.
Junior Brittni Smallwood (Somerset, N.J. / Bishop George) started the Saint Francis runners with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.88 seconds, just .02 seconds off her school-record pace. Junior Kora Hardy (Salisburg, Md. / James M. Benett) placed sixth in the 300-meter dash with a school-record time of 42.20 seconds, and freshman Rachel Posthumus (Sparta, N.J. / Pope John XXIII Regional) placed eighth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:41.88, the second fastest time in program history.
While the Red Flash runners got the team started with some strong performances, the throwers made their mark on the Bucknell Invitational.
Senior Diane Gmiter (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Laurel Highlands) won the Shot Put with a toss of 14.62 meters, and was followed by junior Lisa Morse (Freedom, N.Y. / Pioneer Central) in second place with a toss of 14.21 meters.
Senior Amanda Klingensmith (Punxsutawney, Pa. / Punxsutawney), senior Kayla Herron (Cumberland, Ohio / John Glenn) and sophomore Elise Pearce (Cherry Tree, Pa. / Purchase Line) finished second through fourth, respectively, in the Weight Throw for the Red Flash. Klingensmith threw for a distance of 16.92 meters, while Herron’s went 15.94 meters, and Pearce’s traveled 15.29 meters.
