Track & Field Teams Record More Top Times at Golden Flash Gala

KENT, Ohio. (Dec. 9, 2006) – The Saint Francis men’s and women’s track & field teams traveled to Kent State University this past weekend where they recorded several school records and top times at the Golden Flash Gala, held at the Kent State Field House. The unscored, two-day meet wrapped up on Saturday with a number of field and running events.

Red Flash seniors Erika Jacobs (Toronto, Ontario / West Hill Collegiate) and junior Kora Hardy (Salisbury, Md. / James M. Benett) paced the women’s team by setting school records in the 1000-meter run and the 200-meter dash, respectively. Jacobs won the 1000 with a time of 2 minutes, 56.1 seconds, while Hardy took ninth in the 200 in 25.86 seconds. Hardy was followed by junior Brittni Smallwood (Somerset, N.J. / Bishop George), who recorded a personal best with a time of 26.37 seconds.

Other top performances by the women were a first place finish by senior Diane Gmiter (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Laurel Highlands) in the shot put with a toss of 48 feet, 4 inches. Senior Kayla Herron (Cumberland, Ohio / John Glenn) finished second in the weight throw with the second-best throw in school history, a distance of 59-01.25 feet. Junior Alexandra Hyland (Beachwood, N.J. / Toms River South) also placed second in the 3000-meter run with a personal best of 10:40.84.

The Saint Francis men also recorded several top times, including the Top-3 finishers in the long jump where senior Tavon Moss (Baltimore, Md. / St. Francis Prep), freshman Mikko Aronopaa, and sophomore Denis Eradiri (Sofia, Bulgaria / Vladislav Gramatik 73) took first, second and third, respectively. Moss won with a distance of 23 feet, 0.75 inches, while Aronopaa had the third longest jump in school history (23-00.5) and Eradiri recorded the six-best performance in school history (22-02.25).

Moss also finished third in the high jump with a distance of 6-04.00, and sophomore Josh Hazen (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon) took third in the shot put with the second best performance in program history at 51-09.25.

Junior John Balouris (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) won the mile run with a time of 4:16.76, and Freshman Chris Behre (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) finished second in the 1000-meter run in 2:33.85.

The Red Flash 4x400-meter relay team of junior Ian Butcher (Georgetown, Ontario / Christ the King), senior Thomas O’Brien (Philadelphia, Pa. / Cardinal O’Hara), sophomore Jorden Davis (Mississauga, Ontario / Loyola Catholic) and senior James Bush took fourth with the fifth-fastest time in school history in 3:20.1, and Davis also took 10th in the 200 with a personal best, and fourth fastest time in program history, in 22.31 seconds.
