Chair, Academic Center for Enrichment
Coordinator, SAGE Program

The Study Acceleration: Gaining Excellence (SAGE) Program of Saint Francis University encourages and enables students to improve their academic achievement. Academic skills and habits are examined and strengthened through the collaborative efforts of professional staff (SAGE coaches), peer tutors, and program students themselves. Educational goals are clarified, and purposeful actions are planned and implemented to assist students in attaining good academic standing.

Student/Coach Conversations

The SAGE student will complete the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) early in the semester. With this, the SAGE coach will help the student to identify his/her academic strengths and weaknesses. Both the student and the coach will work together one-to-one to better utilize student strengths, improve upon weaknesses, and implement specific strategies to improve academic performance. They may also discuss other topics, such as career aspirations or any personal, social, or familial concerns which may be impacting the student's academics.

The SAGE coach will refer the student to appropriate campus services as needed. The SAGE Program Coordinator is also available to assist the student. Please contact the SAGE Program Coordinator, Denise Kovach, in the Academic Center for Enrichment (102 Francis Hall, ext. 3024) with any questions or concerns.

Tutorial Assistance

Trained peer tutors are available to assist the SAGE student. These highly successful students can share their skills and insights in many course areas. To obtain the services of a peer tutor, the student should simply speak with the SAGE coach or to the tutor coordinator. Shannon Klein, in the Academic Center for Enrichment (111 Francis Hall, ext. 3178). Individual tutoring should be an integral part of the student's SAGE participation. The use of peer tutoring is strongly recommended.

Resource Library

Located within the Academic Center for Enrichment (101 Francis Hall), the Resource Library provides a variety of materials on study skills, college adjustment issues, career planning, and other topics related to student success in college.  Please see the Resource Library in the Academic Center for Enrichment for a complete listing.

Writing Center Services

The Writing Center, located in 113 Francis Hall, is one of the many academic support services provided by the Academic Center for Enrichment. The purpose of the Writing Center is to guide students though the writing process so they become capable and competent writers.

Writing Center services are available on a walk-in basis. However, appointments are recommended. Services are free to all students enrolled at Saint Francis University.

Attendance Policy

"Satisfactory" SAGE attendance is defined as missing no more than six (6) hours from one's regularly assigned SAGE group per semester. Students are required to arrive on time for every SAGE session. Tardiness in excess of fifteen minutes is considered an absence.

Note: A review of past SAGE students' performances indicates a positive correlation between SAGE attendance and better grades.

Structured Study

All SAGE students must attend six (6) hours of supervised studies each week, beginning with the second week of classes and lasting through the final week of classes. Each study session is monitored by a SAGE "coach" who is a member of the faculty or administrative staff. Coaches are available during these sessions to advise the SAGE student.

If you have any questions or if you have a disability which requires accommodations, please call 814-472-3024 or email ace@francis.edu.
