Geothermal heat pumps use the constant temperature of the earth as the exchange medium instead of the outside air temperature. This allows the system to be more efficient in heating and cooling because (for example) it doesn’t have to work to raise the temperature from 10° to 70° in the winter, it only has to raise it from around 50°. There are two basic types of geothermal heat pumps: closed loop and open loop with variations on each. The kind that you install depends on the climate, soil conditions, available land, and local installation costs. Closed-loop are the most common type of geothermal heat pump design and feature high density polyethylene pipe buried horizontally at 4-6 feet deep (for the closed horizontal loop) or vertically at 100 to 400 feet deep (for the closed vertical loop). These pipes are filled with an environmentally friendly antifreeze/water solution that acts as a heat exchanger. In the winter, the fluid in the pipes extracts heat from the earth and carries it into the building. In the summer, the system reverses and takes heat from the building and deposits it to the cooler ground. The design is basically the same for closed pond/lake loops, but instead of being buried underground, a supply line pipe is run underground from the building to a nearby pond or lake and coiled into circles at least eight feet under the surface to prevent freezing. Open-loop systems use well or surface body water as the heat exchange fluid that circulates directly through the system. Once it has circulated through the system, the water returns to the ground through the well, a recharge well, or surface discharge.
Typical installed costs for homeowners can range from $12,000 - $20,000 depending on heating/cooling load, site characteristics and other factors. This is more than a conventional HVAC system but heat pumps last much longer, are typically easier (and cheaper) to maintain, and become more cost effective as electricity rates increase (a likely future scenario).
