Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL)

What is PLTL?

Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) is a nationally-recognized and NSF-endorsed program for supporting students in mathematics and the sciences.  It was originally developed for chemistry, but has been applied to other fields successfully.  The purpose of the program is to create an environment in which “cooperative learning” can take place to supplement the class and increase student success.

Peer Leaders Responsibilities:

One of the most important aspects of the PLTL program is the peer leader.  Peer leaders are mature, responsible students who have scored a B or better in the subject.  SFU peer leaders are paid and gain valuable experience while reinforcing knowledge about the subject. 
Additional responsibilities for peer leaders include:

  • Conduct weekly one-hour workshop sessions as scheduled and facilitate the completion of a faculty-developed activity with the peer group, who will be required to attend the workshop sessions
  • Attend one science leader’s training course prior to the beginning of the fall semester, tentatively scheduled for the Friday before the first week of classes
  • Attend weekly preparation meetings with the faculty member who is instructing the course and other meetings as needed
  • Maintain attendance records and policies established for workshop participants
  • Provide any completed student activities to the course faculty member as required
  • Informally assess the progress of individual group members
