 Accelerated Programming

The Saint Francis University OCE offers a variety of ways that adult learners can shorten their time in the classroom while still benefiting from the educational excellence that symbolizes Saint Francis:

Accelerated Formats

Adult learners who have completed at least 36 college-level credits are eligible to register for any of the 7-week courses offered during the traditional fall and spring semesters, or through the Saturdays at Saint Francis program modules. These classes require extensive preparation, before and during the course, and considerable independent study on the part of the adult learner. Some individuals may have the opportunity to complete up to 36 credits of study in one year, through the Saturdays at Saint Francis or Saturdays at State College schedule. Other accelerated formats include week-end sessions throughout the fall and spring, and one and three week sessions in the summer.

Portfolio Assessment

Since many of the adult learners pursuing degrees through OCE are or have been employed in the local business community, the University is piloting a program of assessment that would reward their experienced-based learning. Individuals eligible for portfolio credit must have at least five years of work-based experience, and be able to demonstrate proficiency in a given area through (1) identification and definition of specific prior learning, (2) an essay or narrative which explains the manner in which the learning can be applied to the chosen degree program, (3) documentation or proof that the learning has taken place, and (4) a credit request specifying the number of credits being sought. Portfolio-based assessment cannot exceed a total of 21 credits.

Transfer of Credits

Saint Francis University recognizes successfully completed course work from accredited colleges and universities from around the country, as well as many of the local business schools. Upon evaluation, individuals with documented transcripts of relevant course work can fulfill requirements for major, collateral, or general education credits.

CLEP

Adult learners can test out of certain courses through the College Level Examination Program. CLEP exams are available in several areas of the business and general education. Individuals wishing a schedule of CLEP tests or information on CLEP preparation can contact the OCE at 472-3012.

Internships

Individuals enrolled in business-based bachelor degree programs are given the opportunity to complete up to 15 credits of study through applied internships. Internship applications may be made once the learner has completed at least half of the major course requirements. Such internships are arranged by the adult learner and may take place at his or her place of employment or at the location of choice. Request for internships must be made through the OCE and the Business Administration Department of Saint Francis University.
