Nursing Program

 Nursing - Program Description

Nursing does not only pertain to just students venturing out from high school.  The Nursing department at Saint Francis University educates students from all ages, from high school graduates, to returning adult students wanting to start a new career.

The following is a general outline of the subject areas you will be studying each year:

Freshman Year

Sophomore Year

Junior Year

Senior Year


The Nursing Prerequisites include five natural sciences:

  •  

    Biology I (1 course with lab)

    Anatomy and physiology courses  (2 courses with labs)

    Microbiology (1 course with lab)

    Chemistry course (1 course with lab) 

Prerequisite courses are necessary because nursing is both an art and a science.  A glance at the courses you will be taking the first two years will show that the prerequisite courses provide the background knowledge needed to master your nursing education.


Introduction to Nursing

The course, NURS 100 - Introduction to Professional Nursing, will introduce you to the nursing field.  


Preparation for Future Nursing Courses

The courses:

  • NURS 200 - Nursing Assessment of the Person
  • NURS 201 - Health and the Developing Person 

at the end of your sophomore year will prepare you for your future nursing courses.


Clinical Courses will include:

FALL

  • NURS 300:  Fundamentals of Human Care Nursing
    Introduction to the psycho-motor, math, and basic theoretical skills of nursing 
  • NURS 301:  Care of Childbearing Families
    Clinical experience in the care of childbearing families experience pregnancy.
     

SPRING

  • NURS 302:  Care of Adults with Acute Alterations in Health
    Clinical experience in the care of adults who need acute hospital care
  • NURS 303:  Care of Children
    Clinical experience in the care of children in the hospital and community settings.

Theory Courses

These courses support the clinical courses and the associated theory of each course.


Clinical courses will include:

FALL

  • NURS 401:  Care of Individuals With Life Threatening Alterations in Health 
    Clinical experience in the care of individuals in intensive care settings.

  • NURS 402:  Care of Individuals with Alterations in Psychiatric/Mental Health 
    Clinical experience in the care of individuals with psychiatric and mental health problems in the acute hospital and community settings.

SPRING

  • NURS 411:  Nursing Management/Leadership Practicum
    A preceptorship course which will give you the opportunity to apply management and leadership skills in practice 

Opportunities will be offered for the following clinical experiences:

  • NURS 405:  Community Nursing Community and public health nursing

  • NURS 404:  Care of Individuals with Chronic Alterations in Health
    The care for people with chronic conditions who have acute exacerbations and people in rehabilitation
