Men's Soccer Ties American, Three Named To All-Tournament Team

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  (Sept. 24, 2006) – The Saint Francis men’s soccer team recorded its second straight shutout and extended its unbeaten streak to three games by battling a tough American University squad to a scoreless tie on Sunday afternoon at the University of New Mexico Youth Soccer Association Classic.

The Red Flash finished the tournament with a 1-0-1 record after a 1-0 win over College of Charleston on Friday night. Sophomore midfielder Aaron Clapham (Christchurch, New Zealand / Aranui), sophomore midfielder Donnie Montoya (Albuquerque, N.M. / Saint Pius X) and sophomore goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) were named to the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association Classic All-Tournament team for their efforts in helping Saint Francis improve to 3-5-1 on the season.

The Red Flash will now turn their attention to the Northeast Conference schedule. They will open NEC play with a 2:30 p.m. contest at Robert Morris next Sunday. Saint Francis has a 6-14-1 all-time record against its rivals from Moon Township.

Williams stopped six shots in recording his second straight shutout. Two of his saves came in overtime. The Red Flash outshot the Eagles 17-12 in the game, and held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Clapham had three shots on the goal, while senior forward Scott Thompson (Durham, England / Lanchester Saint Bedes) had two shots on net.

After beginning the season 1-5, Saint Francis has stormed back to go 2-0-1 after a near-upset of the nation’s second-ranked team, Virginia.
