Teamwork Pays Off in SFU Win at Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 17, 2006) – The Saint Francis men’s soccer team scored three goals in the final 20 minutes to come from behind in a much-needed 3-1 victory over Howard on Sunday afternoon on our nation’s capital.

Sophomore assistant co-captain Aaron Clapham (Christchurch, New Zealand / Aranui) sparked the offense with a goal and an assist, including the game-tying goal at 71 minutes, 43 seconds. He assisted on the game-winner as well.

The Red Flash snapped a four match losing streak to improve to 2-5 on the year. They will travel out west for a two-match tournament at New Mexico this weekend. Saint Francis will play College of Charleston at 7 p.m. on Friday, before battling American at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. They will be the third and fourth games in a streak of seven away from home.

The Red Flash, who were coming off a tough late-match loss at No. 2 Virginia last Tuesday, fell behind early when Shakir Davy scored at 9:45. It was Howard’s only shot of the first half, compared to eight shots for Saint Francis. Clapham got the Red Flash on the board at 71:43, then assisted on the eventual game-winner by senior Scott Thompson (Durham, England / Lanchester Saint Bedes) at 81:30, before sophomore Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe (Greenbelt, Md. / Eleanor Roosevelt) added an insurance goal at 85:42. Freshman Daniel Moir (Christchurch, New Zealand / Shirley Boys) recorded his first career assist on the final tally.

“It was disappointing to get behind early in the match, but maybe that’s what we needed,” said Saint Francis head coach B.J. Craig. “At halftime, we just talked about how important it is for the team to work together. When we did that in the second half, the game came quickly to us. There were some great goals today, but it took a team to get the result for the win. I was just very pleased with the second half performance.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) stopped two shots for the Red Flash, giving him 13 saves in two games last week.

Saint Francis outshot Howard 17-5 in the match.
