AKRON, Ohio (Sept. 3, 2006) – Junior defender Bryce Luetzen (Denver, Colo. / Denver Lutheran) scored off a penalty kick in the 77th minute and senior goalkeeper Justin Janicek (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) stopped seven shots, but the Saint Francis men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision as 15th-ranked Akron escaped the upset on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Flash dropped to 1-3 on the season, while the Zips improved to 3-1. Saint Francis will be back in action 4 p.m. Wednesday against Bucknell, at the Stokes Soccer Complex.
Janicek faced 18 shots from Akron and came away with seven saves in a terrific effort, and Luetzen tallied his first goal of the season off a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1 in the 77th minute.
Akron had two shots on goal in overtime, but it was the second one that slipped past Janicek. Sinisa Ubiparipovic slipped a pass to Pablo Moreira, who put the ball into the left corner of the net at 98:49.
The Zips had taken a 1-0 lead off an Ashley Kozicki goal in the 32nd minute. Ubiparipovic also received an assist on that goal.
Luetzen, sophomore midfielder Aaron Clapham (Christchurch, New Zealand / Aranui), and senior forward Scott Thompson (Durham, England / Lanchester Saint Bedes) each had two shots for the Red Flash.
