FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Oct. 20, 2006) – The Saint Francis men’s soccer team remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference play on Friday by virtue of a bit of good luck in a 1-0 win at Sacred Heart.
The Red Flash received an own goal after Pioneers sophomore Jonatan Allback and goalkeeper Matthew Jones misplayed a ball into the net. Allback passed back to Jones, who wasn’t in position to make a play on the ball. Before the two Sacred Heart players got to the ball, it was in the back of the net for a 1-0 Saint Francis lead at 87 minutes, 12 seconds.
The Red Flash improved to 7-5-3 overall, and 4-0-2 in the Northeast Conference. They extended their school-record unbeaten streak to nine matches (6-0-3) by winning their fourth consecutive match. They have six shutouts during their unbeaten streak.
Saint Francis will travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for a crucial 1 p.m. league game on Sunday. The Knights have 16 points (5-0-1), while the Red Flash have 14 points (4-0-2) heading into the conference showdown. It will be a preview of two teams in position to clinch Northeast Conference playoff berths.
Saint Francis was outshot 14-8 in the contest against the Pioneers, however sophomore goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) did not have to make a save in recording his sixth shutout of the year. Jones stopped five shots for Sacred Heart.
