New Job Opportunities Posted: Just a reminder that the Career Services department at SFU occasionally posts employment opportunities for graduates on their website.  Click on the following link:  Career Services Web Site to view opportunities for graduates.

Notification of Recertification Fee Changes:  Effective January 1, 2004, the fee to recertify by documenting continuing education will increase from $75 to $100. PHR and SPHR certified professionals whose recertification will expire in 2003 and who do not submit an application by December 31, 2003, will be mailed a new recertification application form that reflects the change in early 2004. Also, effective January 1, 2004, the discounted recertification-by-examination fee has been discontinued.

The HRM graduate program at Saint Francis University has been officially approved by HRCI to award recertification credits for class sessions attended by our alumni using the Alumni Refresher Option. To read the announcement, go to: http://www.hrmabc.org/Newsletters.htm and view the Fall 2002 Newsletter.

Alumni of the HRM program in the Loretto, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh areas have the opportunity to take part in the ALUMNI REFRESHER OPTION. This is a special opportunity for alumni to sit in on classes, several of which are new and revised since you were last enrolled in the program, either to earn recertification credits, e.g., PHR or SPHR, etc., or to enrich your learning in areas of importance and interest to you.

Here's how it works:

  • You may attend as many class sessions as you wish; there are no requirements to commit to any number of class sessions per course, nor to take exams, write any papers or buy any books.

  • You pay a reduced fee of $100.00!  That's about half the rate of a one-day seminar that may be taught by someone less knowledgeable than our highly accomplished faculty.

  • You interact with HR professionals and aspiring entrants to the HR field in an interactive learning environment led by instructors who "practice what they preach." Most have earned their professional certification (SPHR, CEEBS, etc.) and occupy senior HR or employment law positions.

Several alumni have already taken advantage of this lifelong learning opportunity.  Comments have been favorable and encouraging.  We look forward to adding you to the list.

Registration for the Alumni Refresher option runs concurrent with regular graduate registration. The schedule is available online each semester.  New courses and current content make this offer an important and convenient way to extend the value of your degree in Human Resource Management from Saint Francis University.

The contact number to call when inquiring about the Alumni Refresher Option is 800-457-6300, option 4 or (814) 472-3026.

ALUMNI AMBASSADORS
New Student Referrals

Thank you for the many new student referrals you have sent us. You are our ambassadors. When we ask people inquiring about the program how they learned about us, the most frequent response is "I know someone who graduated from your program." Your recommendation to your friends, colleagues, co-workers and employees is often the most important reason a person decides to apply to the program. They know that you value the education you received at Saint Francis University and that it has contributed to your success.

If you know a friend, colleague, co-worker or employee who may be interested in applying to the program, give them our web address:  www.francis.edu and invite them to explore our web site and learn about the program. The schedule for the upcoming semester is always posted on the page as soon as it has been finalized. Invite interested people to call us at 1-800-457-6300 (option number 4) or send an e-mail request to:  rhogue@francis.edu to request a program brochure and application materials and to have their name added to our mailing list.

Thank you again for your many referrals.

TESTIMONIALS

I've been out of school for several years.....
Will I fit in and be able to do the work?"

Many people considering entering graduate school ask us this question. Ninety-five percent of our students entered our program after several years of work experience.  Our current students share their experiences on this subject:

"Before I began the Graduate program, I had some anxiety because it had been a number of years since college graduation and I wasn't sure I could keep a professional career, a busy personal schedule and evening/Saturday classes all in balance. Relief was not long in coming since I saw familiar faces when I walked into the first class - others like me who had responsible positions and families to care for.  The classes took time to prepare for, but the practical experience gained while working was an asset in taking many of the classes.

The Saint Francis Graduate School experience has been stimulating and personally rewarding!"

Barbara E. Roth
Vice President - Human Resources
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
M.A. in HRM/IR Graduate

"The hardest part of this decision was ‘just getting started. 'Once I began the program in January 1996, I found myself in the same situation as many of my colleagues--busy, but extremely progressive individuals who understand the importance of what it takes to be experts and leaders in their field.  I find St. Francis College's program to be well led, well structured and well balanced for one considering graduate school. The program is challenging and demanding, but the staff works well with the students to help ensure individual success. I also find the professors and instructors to be extremely well qualified, experts in the courses they teach, and well suited to teach the course material to students."

Oreste S. DiCerbo
Recruiting Supervisor
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
M.A. in HRM/IR Graduate

 "I just graduated from college...
Will I fit in with older students
who have experience in the business world?"

We find that students who enter the program right after college benefit greatly from the experiences of their fellow students who have already established their careers. They have "many teachers in the class" besides the professor.  Younger students  benefit when their fellow students share their  real-life experiences in class. They gain practical knowledge of "what's going on out there" not only from the professor but from the other students as well.

Younger students also benefit from the association with students already established in their careers with the opportunity to network.  When job searching begins, fellow students can help as references and can pass along another student's name when a position opening in the field comes up.

"Having classes with a mixed-aged population has proven to be quite beneficial.  Many of the ‘experienced' individuals provide helpful insight with workplace relations scenarios that are discussed during class. I also found that working in class with professionals already actively ‘involved' in my chosen field enabled me to better guide my future interests as well as obtain information regarding current job openings within their respective industries. Being somewhat idealistic I often thought I  could ‘conquer the world' with my brainstorming ideas.  But by working with experienced professionals in class, I was able to hear and understand what has and has not worked in the past, thereby benefiting from the experience of others."

"By attending classes with the adult students in the program, I have found that their presence has widened my outlook on the business world.  I have been given the opportunity to experience many various viewpoints which will help me after I graduate from the HR program."
