Red Flash Fall Short in Defense of NEC Championship

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (May 6, 2007) – The Saint Francis University men’s golf team came up one stroke shy in its defense of the Northeast Conference Championship Sunday afternoon at the Sea Trail Resort.  The Monmouth Hawks walked away with their first-ever conference title.

The Red Flash were paced by senior Nick Wheeler (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll), who shot a one-over 73 on Sunday - the second-best round of the afternoon - to tie for sixth place overall with a 225.

Juniors Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec/Academie Les Estacades) and Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) tied for 11th at 227.

Both Saint Francis and Monmouth tied for low-round honors on Sunday, shooting 301 in breezy conditions to match the tightest finish in league history. In 1995, Robert Morris beat out Fairleigh Dickinson by one stroke.

This year, the Hawks finished with a three-day score of 902, followed by the Red Flash’s 903 and Central Connecticut State ended up in third place - six strokes off the pace at 908.

Rounding out the Red Flash scoring, freshman Mike Magalski (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) finished in a tie for 16th place (75-75-79 229) and freshman Chad Walker (St. Thomas, Ontario / Central Elgin Collegiate Institute) wound up in 28th place (79-80-75 234).
