LORETTO, Pa. (May 1, 2007) – Fresh off its seventh Northeast Conference championship, the Saint Francis women’s golf team earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship Regionals, where it has been selected to participate in the Central Regional.
The Red Flash will compete in the Central Regional May 10-12 at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. They will join 20 other teams in the regional, including host Michigan, SEC champion Georgia, Vanderbilt, Southern California, Tennessee, Arizona, Big Ten champion Michigan State and Mountain West champion TCU.
The regional tournaments are conducted to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of the NCAA championships competition. A total of 324 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional. The championships finals will be held May 22-25 at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Saint Francis won the Northeast Conference championship for the fifth time in six years after concluding the three-day, 54-hole course at the Hershey East Golf Course with a final tally of 330-344-331-1005.
Winning her second consecutive individual title was junior Samantha Milosh (Aliquippa, Pa. / Center), who racked up a three-day total of 72-84-78-234 after firing a seven-over-par 78 in the final round of action on Sunday. She was nine strokes better than her nearest competitor.
Red Flash senior Megan Schaeffer (Richland, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon) became a four-time All-Northeast Conference honoree. She took sixth in this weekend’s tournament with an 84-85-78-247.
Junior Stephanie Switzer (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver) finished in a tie for 15th place with an 86-87-8260, freshman Lisa Kocin (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) tied for 22nd with an 88-88-95-271, freshman Katelyn Waghorn (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) was tied for 25th win an 95-91-88-274
