Men’s, Women’s Golfers Lead After First Round of Monmouth Hawk Invitational
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (April 3, 2006) – Saint Francis University sophomore Samantha Milosh (Aliquippa, Pa.) tied her career-low round with a 4-over par 75 to take the individual lead and boost the Red Flash to the team lead after the first round of the Hawk Invitational hosted by Monmouth University at Eagle Ridge Golf Club on Sunday.
On the men’s side, sophomore Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario) carded a 2-over par 73 and is tied for second place, one shot behind the tournament leader, as Saint Francis posted four scores in the 70’s to assume a three-shot lead after the opening day of competition.
The Red Flash women shot a team total 331 and lead Long Island by one shot, Hartford by three and Monmouth by five. Senior Mary Kate Williams (Somerville, N.J.) fired an opening round 10-over par 81 and is tied for fourth. Junior Megan Schaeffer (Richland, Pa.) is tied for 13th after an 85 and sophomore Stephanie Switzer (Beaver, Pa.) is tied for 22nd following a 90.
The Red Flash men carded a team total of 305 and lead Bucknell by three shots and Quinnipiac by seven heading into the final round of the two-day event on Monday. Junior Nick Wheeler (Ingersoll, Ontario) and sophomore Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec) are tied for fifth following 6-over par 77’s, while junior Craig Alvaro (Saint Thomas, Ontario) is in a five-way tie for ninth after a 7-over par 78. Junior Mike Hammond (London, Ontario) shot an 80 and is tied for 17th.
