Red Flash Golfers Sweep Individual Titles at Hawk Invitational, Men Take Team Title

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Apr. 3, 2006) – Sophomore Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario) fired his second straight 2-over-par 73 on Monday afternoon to capture his first collegiate individual title and lead the Saint Francis men’s golf team to a first-place finish in the first-ever Hawk Invitational, hosted by Monmouth University at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club.

On the women’s side, junior Megan Schaeffer (Richland, Pa.) shot a career-best 74 and won a playoff hole against Hartford’s JoAnna Krupa to come back and win her first career individual title with an 85-74-159. She led the Red Flash women to a third place finish with a team score of 331-339-670. Her previous best finish was second place at the 2004 Northeast Conference championships.

Gowdy finished with a 73-73-146 to take the men’s individual title, and finish two strokes ahead of Bucknell’s Ben Pellicani. The Red Flash men finished the two-day event by carding a 305-309-614. They finished six strokes ahead of the Bison, who took second.

Junior Nick Wheeler (Ingersoll, Ontario) helped pace the men as he finished third overall with a 77-74-151. He was followed by sophomore Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec), who tied for eighth with a 77-78-155. Junior Craig Alvaro (Saint Thomas, Ontario) finished in a tie for 25th with a two-day total of 78-84-162.

Long Island won the women’s team title (332-325-657), and was followed by Hartford in second place (334-332-666).

Schaeffer was tied for 13th place after the first day of competition, but jumped the field with her 2-over-par 74. She was followed by teammates Mary Kate Williams (Somerville, N.J.) and Samantha Milosh (Aliquippa, Pa.), who tied for fourth place.

Williams, a senior, shot a two-round 81-81-162, and Milosh, who is a sophomore, fired a 75-87-162. Sophomore Stephanie Switzer (Beaver, Pa.) finished 27th with a 90-97-187.
