Gowdy, Schaeffer Chosen NEC Golfers of the Week
LORETTO, Pa. (April 6, 2006) – Saint Francis University sophomore men's golfer Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario) and junior women's golfer Megan Schaeffer (Richland, Pa.) were named the Northeast Conference’s Golfers of the Week following their individual victories at Monmouth’s Hawk Invitational on Monday.
Gowdy fired back-to-back rounds of 2-over par 73 to win his first collegiate individual title by two shots and lead the Red Flash men’s team to its second consecutive team title with a two-day total of 614. SFU won the Mount Saint Mary’s Fall Classic in October. Gowdy tied for second place at that event with a two-day 7-over par 151. Gowdy and the Red Flash men begin play at the two-day Lafayette Invitational this Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
Schaeffer earned the second conference weekly award of her career for her come-from-behind win at the Hawk Invitational. Schaeffer shot a career-low 3-over par 74 on the second day of competition to force a playoff with Hartford’s JoAnna Krupa. Schaeffer bested Krupa in the playoff to win her first career individual title. Schaeffer shot an 85 and was tied for 13th place after the first round. The Red Flash women will compete in one more tournament, Toledo’s Rocket Spring Classic in Delaware, Ohio, on April 17 and 18, before heading to Florida for the NEC Championship, to be played at Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course on April 29 and 30
