Red Flash Men’s Golf Team Captures First-Ever Northeast Conference Championship
Saint Francis University becomes first school in league history to capture both men’s and women’s golf titles in same season
ORLANDO, Fla. (May 7, 2006) – Sophomore Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec/Academie Les Estacades) shot a 76 on Sunday at the par-72, 6,802-yard Palm Golf Course at Walt Disney World, after a tournament-low 72 on Saturday, to lead St. Francis (PA) to its first ever Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championship with a tight two-stroke victory over Quinnipiac.
The Red Flash shot 308 in the final round after firing a 302 on Saturday for a two-day score of 610. For the first time in league history, the same school has won both the men's and women's conference championship, with the St. Francis (PA) women capturing its sixth league title last Sunday at Walt Disney World.
St. Francis head coach Bob Hahn was named NEC Coach of the Year. The Red Flash now move on to NCAA regional competition from May 18-20 (site to be determined).
Quinnipiac moved from sixth to second by carding a 295 on Sunday - the low round in the tournament - and 612 for the event. Long Island came in third with a 614, just four strokes behind the pace-leading Red Flash squad. Central Connecticut State finished fourth (619), followed by Monmouth (621), Sacred Heart (626), Mount St. Mary's (639), Robert Morris (642), Wagner (660) and Fairleigh Dickinson (665).
Foisy becomes the first St. Francis (PA) men's golfer since Eric Couture in 2003 to win the individual crown by topping a quartet of runners-up by two strokes. The second-place group includes Quinnipiac's Steve Velardi (Hamden, CT/Hamden), St. Francis’ Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas), LIU's Matt Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/St. Andrew's Presbyterian College) and Quinnipiac’s Ian O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), who netted a second-day low 72 on Sunday.
Also for the Red Flash, junior Nick Wheeler (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll Collegiate) carded a 75-80-155 to finish tied for 15th, junior Craig Alvaro (Saint Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate) wrapped up a two-round total 83-77-160 to finish tied for 25th, and junior Mike Hammond (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) finished tied for 37th with a 80-86-166.
