LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2006) – On a chilly, blustery Senior Day at DeGol Field, the Saint Francis University field hockey team said goodbye to four of the players who helped lay the program’s foundation, but at the same time caught a glimpse of a brighter future as the Flash fell to Monmouth 5-3, to close out the team’s sixth season of competition.
Prior to Sunday’s match, the team’s four senior members, Katie Grogan (Allenwood, NJ / Wall), Terri King (Lancaster, PA / Carlisle), Erin Maguire (Jeffersontown, KY / Presentation Academy), and Kristen Onto (Point Pleasant, NJ / Point Pleasant Borough), were recognized. Despite a meager win total over their careers, those players figured in to the first wins in program history and posted individual statistics that will serve as the standard for players to come.
It was the Red Flash youth that stole the show during the game however, particularly sophomore Belen Albanes (Atlanta, GA / Dunwoody) and freshman Allison Severage (Garwood, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson). The two paired up for seven of Saint Francis’ 10 shots on goal and eight of the team’s thirteen total shots.
Albanes stood out among her teammates scoring two goals, including an impressive field-length breakaway score in which she controlled the ball through some initial traffic and proceeded to beat Monmouth goalkeeper Chelsea Farley one-on-one.
Junior Kati Kenyon (Glenmont, NY / Niskayuna) came up big for the Flash off the bench, firing one goal and posting an additional shot on goal.
Defensive lapses and missed opportunities off penalty corners eventually doomed the Flash. With the score tied 1-1 in the first half, Monmouth took the lead on a ball deflected into the Saint Francis goal off the stick of a Red Flash player.
The team was unable to cash in on any of its seven penalty corners.
