LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2006) – The Saint Francis field hockey team dominated for much of 70 minutes, but Bellarmine scored two late goals and came up with several big stops to hand the Red Flash a tough 3-0 loss on Friday night at DeGol Field.
Saint Francis (0-8) outshot the Knights 10-9 in the contest, and held a 17-9 advantage in penalty corners and controlled the tempo of the game for most of the night. The Red Flash had several good chances to score, but Kristina Thomas stopped three shots. Bellarmine was also the beneficiary of a great defensive save by Tumaini Malenga.
Sloane Hubbuch scored off a penalty stroke at 8 minutes, 45 seconds to put Saint Francis behind 1-0. The score stayed that way until 63:41 when Sara Roney fought goalkeeper Erin Reifsteck (Battle Creek, Mich. / Saint Phillip) for a loose ball. Roney’s goal was followed by another from Hannah McNally at 69:41 to put the game away.
Reifsteck stopped six shots in the game, and four different Red Flash players recorded shots on goal. Junior back Leigh Ann Conroy (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) and junior forward Caitlin Goodreds (Howell, N.J. / Howell) each had two shots in the match.
