View the 2009 Academy Video The Saint Francis University Environmental Engineering Design Academy is a week-long program designed to provide an opportunity for talented high school students between their sophomore-junior and junior-senior years to experience engineering and the engineering design process. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit while participating in fun, hands-on activities illustrating what it is like to be an engineer and the opportunities that would be available to them if they pursue engineering as a profession. Students will gain first-hand project-based experience with the work that engineers do. Each day, students will participate in a mini-design project ranging from the low-tech task of building-and piloting- a cardboard boat to cutting-edge problems in electric vehicle engineering, robotics technology, and alternative energy. These mini-projects will be followed by field trips to see real engineers working on full-scale versions of these same problems at local tech-driven companies. Selected students will be provided with housing, meals, course materials, and two college credits (Engineering 101 and Engineering 102, 1 credit each) upon completion of the program. The total cost for the program is $400. (A $50 application fee is due with the submission of the application materials. The $350 balance is due at the time of selection.) Students with an interest in pursuing a career in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, or technical fields are encouraged to apply. |
