Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby

 An interactive workshop for expectant mothers

Saturday, November 7, 2009

"Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby," a one-day, interactive workshop will be held 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, at the DiSepio Institute for Rural Health and Wellness on the University’s campus in Loretto.  Participants will be offered several sessions over the course of the day including sessions on nutrition, infant massage instruction, prenatal exercise, relaxation techniques, car seat safety, and Infant/Child CPR certification.  The emphasis of the workshop is on health for both mother and baby during this important time.  

When:  8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, November 7

Where:  DiSepio Institute for Rural Health and Wellness (2nd floor), Saint Francis University campus in Loretto

Registration:  Space is limited.  Call (814) 472-3923 before October 30.

Cost:  $40 (includes a nutritious breakfast and lunch as well as the infant/child CPR certification fee) 

 

Description of Sessions:

Nutrition:  Learn to start your day off the right way! Wake up with a delicious breakfast and a complete serving of nutrition information specific to your pregnancy! This session will include a cooking demonstration, light breakfast, and information regarding calcium, protein, blood sugar regulation and more!  Facilitator:  Jane Maslonik, MSRD, LDN, CDE 

 

Infant Massage:  Did you know that providing infant massage to your child has benefits for the both of you?  Come and join this informative session Loving Touch1taught by a certified infant massage instructor and leave with the basics of how to perform infant massage with your new baby!  Bring along an infant-sized doll, or some will be available for your use.  Facilitator:  Kerri Golden, MOT, OTR/L, CIMI

Prenatal Exercise:  During pregnancy many changes occur in the body.  This low-impact exercise class is designed to help you understand these changes and what to do with your “new” body.  Learn how to maintain strength and flexibility during the childbearing year while preparing for labor and delivery at the same time.  All exercises can be modified to your level of fitness.  All ranges of pregnancy are acceptable other than those who have a physician’s order for bed rest.  Facilitator: Heather Kindel, PT, MPT

The Mommy Ahhhh!  Bringing a new little one into the world is an exciting adventure and can feel a little overwhelming at times.  Learn simple relaxation and stress management techniques that will help you balance body, mind, and spirit!  Facilitator:  Amy Hudkins, MHS, COTA/L

Infant/Child CPR Certification: Knowing infant/child CPR is a critical skill for any parent.  Earn your infant/child CPR certification through the American Heart Association by a certified professional.  Learn this valuable skill, and you might just save a life!  Facilitator:  Karen McCabe, RN, BSN

Car Seat Safety:  Experts from Safe Kids of Blair County will be on hand to address common mistakes when it comes to choosing and installing car seats for infants and small children. This session will offer critical information regarding car seat safety as well as offer time for question and answer for the participants.
